The first day of the PW All American Weekend is workout intensive. Players go through testing in areas like the 60 yard dash, Outfield & Infield Arm Velo & accuracy, Catcher Pop Times & Arm Velo, and extending Batting Practice with metrics captured.
Players spent all morning and early afternoon going through areas of testing to capture their top end numbers.
“It’s always fun to let the kids break out the metal bats and swing away. Many rounds of BP are taken with purpose in mind, whether it’s hitting the other way, laying down bunts or working on game situations. For us, we just want to let the kids take their hacks and try to reach that elusive 100 mph exit velo everyone is chasing,” remarked Brian Werner, President of Prospect Wire.
“For many of these kids, it’s a chance to measure themselves against some of the best from around the country, see where they stand. The metrics help the players find the motivation to improve. All of them want to come back the next year and see those numbers jump up,” expressed Werner.
During Friday’s opening rounds of BP, several players reached triple digits, including 2030 Grad Mark Thompson, who is still only 14 years old.
“We fully expected some of our 2027 or maybe 2028 kids to join the 100 mph club,” stated Alex Michaud, Scouting Director for Prospect Wire. “What we weren’t so sure of was if any of the 2030 class would. We quickly found out we had several who got close, and obviously Mark reached it on his last swing, sending one flying into the stands in LCF.”
The day finished with Game 1 for both teams, as the Underclass (2030 grads) played first, followed by the Upperclass (2027/2028/2029) group. It was a competitive day, filled with non stop action to kick things off for All American Weekend.
