During the XTERRA North American Championship weekend in Shelby County, Alabama, the competition was only part of the story. The open 5K trail run, kids’ activities, wildlife expo, and relaxed event village gave athletes, families, volunteers, and friends plenty of reasons to enjoy the weekend together.
Ruth Rickey, officiating her second XTERRA event, summed it up well: “I have to say the staff and crew are here for the people. They know the athletes racing, they care about them, they get to know them, and they cheer and support them. With food trucks and live music, it’s an event, and an adventure in the woods, not just a race.”
Thank you to Shelby County Alabama, USA Triathlon, Good People Brewing Company, Birmingham Urban Mountain Pedalers, and the Alabama Wildlife Center for helping make the Oak Mountain weekend connected to nature and each other.
